Mend equipment or buy new?

Recently we put a poll out, asking you all “Would you rather mend your equipment or buy brand new stock?” With the multiple-choice answers of, buy brand new or mend.

In a world where buying new products appears cheaper than repairing the old, a lot more waste is filling up landfills which isn’t good for the environment. We have gotten so used to throwing things away after a few years, out with the old and in with the new as they say! However, we wondered what the ideal situation would be? If the price was right, would you want to upcycle what you have and make it last longer? Across social media, 70% of you said you would want to mend your products, with the other 30% voting buy brand new. So it appears, a good proportion of those who took part would like to make use of their current equipment. This is good to hear.

At Sinclair & Rush, the company I work for, a lot of the parts we manufacture are finishing / replacement products. Such as End Caps, Inserts or Feet, which can replace the ones on the current walking sticks or crutches for example. We do a huge range of School Chair Feet which replace the feet on a school chair as opposed to Schools and Colleges needing to throw away the entire chair when the feet have worn down. Replacing the feet on a school chair is a lot cheaper than buying hundreds of new chairs and saves big bulky non recycled waste filling up the tips!

We also manufacture several products that are reusable such as our Visipak range and we have several ranges that are made from recycled materials such as our Netting range.

Some waste is inevitable of course, but we do try to think outside the box with our parts to be as green as we possibly can. What kind of things do you do as an individual or as a company to mend what you already have and make it last longer? It is always great to hear other people’s thoughts…

I would imagine those that voted buy brand new, have done so, because at times it can be cheaper to buy new than replacing the old, which is a sad reality.. and I suppose it can also be nice to have something shiny and new at times…

We hope you enjoyed reading this blog post today, and don’t forget to comment with what you do on this subject as an individual or in the company you work for!
