Salary Transparency when Recruiting

Hi everyone, Ellie here, and in today’s blog I wanted to discuss a topic that I think, and I am sure many agree, is very important. Salary Transparency when Recruiting. This is a topic I have seen discussed a lot lately as this appears to be the season for recruiting new staff and job seekers looking for new roles!

Having a background in recruitment, I know how important the money side of things is to job seekers. When applying for positions, candidates tend to have a minimum salary that they can take to survive, so it’s really important that the salary advertised is accurate and clear! Money is also one of those things that human beings tend to feel uncomfortable talking about. I think it comes down to confidence when saying what money you need and because money is people’s security, discussing what salary is on offer as an employer can make us feel a little awkward, but honesty from the beginning is vital to ensure a foundation of trust can be built between employers and employees.

Similarly, it can help to explain why the particular role is paying a certain salary. In interview an employer can list the reasons why a position pays less or more than other roles, so you can justify the salary on offer and make it clear to the new recruit. For instance, the salary may pay slightly less because no experience or qualifications are required, there is less responsibility or there will be a salary review / increase in the coming months. Being as clear as possible will really help avoid unwanted issues surrounding pay.

To follow on, ultimately, if you are advertising a role, it is important to put the salary banding on the job description to ensure you haven’t wasted time with applicants. I think displaying the salary clearly on the advert, and openly speaking about the salary in the interview, really shows that you operate a Culture of Openness in your Company. This in turn should mean potential employees will also have the same attitude. Being open about the salary speaks volumes and encompasses more than just the salary itself, it shows others that being open and honest is how the business operates overall. It is the start of building a good relationship with your new staff! It also shows as a company that you deal with things head on and are confident and capable, which is what potential new staff want to see!

It is also important not to put a higher salary on the job advert to entice people in if the actual salary is different. It will only put people off and give the business a bad reputation.

So, what are your thoughts on salary transparency? Have you ever experienced a situation like we have discussed? It would be great to hear from you!
